Poems by Lu Perez – Part 3

“Miracle”

This love is nothing short of a miracle.

Not the kind the churches preach about.

Not the kind that healed my sick mother

Not the kind that keeps me wanting to stay alive.

It is the kind that produced Shakespeare, and Nina Simone.

It is the kind that built the pyramids at Giza

And the leaning tower of Pisa.

It is the kind that makes flowers bloom

And invites the morning dew.

It is the kind that keeps the planets in orbit

The sun burning

The moon in its phases.

It is the kind of miracle that the galaxies bow down to

The kind that makes me shiver and tingle

From the very top of my head to the soles of my feet.

that  is what you call a miracle.

you are a miracle. a miracle.

“Notice”

Do you want to know what you are?

Take note of my laugh.

Take note of the way I stare at you

When I think you aren’t looking.

Notice

How my eyes light up

When you come around.

Notice

How easily words come to me

When I am with you.

Do you see it yet?

Have you caught on?

Do you know what you are?

You

Are my happiness.

You

Are my joy.

Notice.

Lu Perez is from the Eastchester section of the Bronx but currently resides in the Fordham area.  Being Latina and growing up in a predominantly Hispanic/Latinx community in the Bronx has been a great influence in the way she writes. Her appreciation for her Dominican heritage comes through in Lu’s work. From the slang, the open fire hydrants during the summer, the sticky streets and booming music have become pieces in the puzzle that forms Lu’s identity; these are the experiences that have had a profound effect on the way Lu perceives the rest of New York, and the world.
