MY JAMES BALDWIN BOOK, MY BUFF STATE CREW NECK, AND MY YEARN TO PERFORM: THINGS YOU TOOK FROM ME
You were in the same room as my remedies
I was looking at you
then looking at my pen
then looking at you
Then looking at my pen
Then questioning my heart
How can it confuse the two ?
How can it keep the two as catalyst for each other ?
As if since birth it needed one another
I thought I needed you for the next birth I planned on being involved in
But it turns out God had me scheduled
For my own rebirth
One where you have no part in
You knew there was much buried in me
I shape shifted into octagons
Hoping you would stop and help me
But I became as stressful as third world countries
And your white collar wouldn’t allow you to dig in me
So how can I confuse you for my remedy
If you no longer want to dig deep and find the jewels in me
for a second I believed I had no more jewels because your hands were empty
I don’t know when I became soil to you
Our love became rotten so I guess you can say you spoiled me
But you were still in the room
and it didn’t smell like foreign memories
It smelled like opportunity and second chances
and God reminding us that soil is birth
But we wasn’t ready
You were counter clockwise,
you kept passing me at the wrong time
before I became a garden,
before my branches
when I was just a seed
A time where I can no longer preach about love,
just hope one day I can practice again
but I’ve Been practicing
I’m on this stage practicing
You were in the same room as my remedies
sometimes I think you still are
Hi, I’m finally a garden

Gabriela Valette is from the Claremont section of the Bronx. Living in The Bronx has made her realize that she’s an underdog. As a Latina growing up in the Bronx, she’s had to fight twice as hard to succeed. What she loves most about The Bronx is our culture. We are a community of underground greatness, you just have to put in that extra work to find it. Her parents came from the Dominican Republic with nothing but hope and enthusiasm and while we all know coming to America wasn’t easy for our parents, having a community where they find familiar faces helped make this journey a little easier.

Gabriela is the representation of eloquence and wisdom delicately placed into one. If you have ever had the pleasure of seeing her perform in person, you would know what it is like to have your breath taken away and gifted back to you.
