Summertime in the Bronx: An Ode

Summertime in the Bronx is just a type of magic that only a true Bronxite can understand.

The block, once shut away and gloomy for the winter, seems to grow vibrant overnight.

The COCOMANGOCHERRY man’s voice booms in the distance as he rolls his cart along the pavement, matching with the jingle of a Mister Softee truck.

The viejitos bring out their little tables and play dominos under the beating sun, drinking Coronas to stay cool.

The friendly neighborhood thugs, who may seem intimidating to outsiders, smile and wave as you pass by.

Going into the bodega for a Mamita to cool off; the bodega cat meowing and weaving its tail through your legs, hoping you share a bit of your snack.

The sound of handballs slapping against the brick walls; children riding their bicycles and playing tag.

Sitting on the stoop, people-watching and talking into the night like it’s 1999 again.

Salsa blasting through Orchard Beach; hustlers trying to sell ice cream and nemos; a Puerto Rican haven.

Smoked air rising from the barbeque grills in Van Courtlandt Park.

Reggaeton pumping from the speakers.

The lingering peacefulness in the air at 7 AM, as if the Bronx hasn’t woken up yet.
